Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the

eceipt of your letter No.52819/28 of the 6th October, regarding the possibility of constructing

a pipe subway under the harbour at Hong Kong as

part of the Hong Kong Water Supply Scheme.

2. In compliance with your request we asked

Mr. Fairley to furnish, if possible, an approximate

estimate of the cost of the proposed subway and

also of the time required for its construction,

and we now enclose a copy of a letter dated 23rd

October from Mr. Fairley containing the information

required.

3. Upon receipt of the above mentioned

letter we thought it would be desirable to compare

Mr. Fairley's estimate of cost with the contract

prices for the two tunnels which Messrs. W. G.

Armstrong Whitworth & Co. Ltd. constructed in

connection with the Shing Munn Valley Scheme.

therefore, asked Messrs. 3ir W. G. Armstrong

Whitworth & Co. to lend us a copy of the Contract,

including the priced Bill of Quantities, and this

we forwarded to Mr. Fairley, and invited him to

say if, in the light of these additional

particulars, he desired to modify his previous
